Jar
This clay jar gets its black color, typical of Santa Clara pottery, by smothering the fire with horse manure. The thick, black, carbon-rich smoke gives the pottery its distinctive black color. The jar features the Avanyu, or water serpent, and is a traditional symbol of the Santa Clara Pueblo. It signifies life, prosperity, and well-being.
